I
painted this in the aftermath of 9/11while discussion was underway
in NYC
regarding what to do with the real estate at ground zero. I felt strongly
that it is hallowed ground where so many souls just left the earth
that day in that location, and
I envisioned the entire area as a memorial park for contemplation
and prayer.
I am not in favor of rebuilding office space. I attempted to portray
souls as birds lingering in the sky above the area as seen from the
vantage point of the harbor, which is guarded by lady liberty—
our symbol of life, hope, liberty and guardian of the New York Harbor.
It is seen from the vantage point of Staten Island where I live, and
from where it is so noticeable that the Manhattan skyline has been
so terribly restructured. It helped me somewhat to have made this
as part of my own grieving process. I am donating it with the hope
that it might be meaningful for others who share a need to memorialize
all the losses of that day. |
